Do I need a referral from a Dentist to see an Orthodontist?

No, a referral is not required, although most of our patients are referred by their private or school dentist. To make an appointment all you need to do is phone our office.

What is the best age to be seen for the first time?

We recommend an initial consultation at around seven years of age, to determine if any problems are developing. If required, full treatment using braces would not start until later, but early corrections can be made to minimize problems and take advantage of facial growth.

Much of the development of the face occurs during the growth spurt at puberty. Once the facial bones have finished growing, surgery may be required to correct skeletal imbalances. Earlier treatment is often easier as the orthodontist can favourably influence growth to avoid more complex problems later.

Are braces always necessary?

We will happily tell you if you don't need braces, but there are a range of reasons why many people do have orthodontic treatment of some kind. Some problems can be corrected in the early stage of development with removable plates. More complex problems usually require braces for correction.

Studies show that the first thing a person notices about you is your smile. A beautiful smile can help improve self-esteem and confidence.

Many people decide to have orthodontic treatment because they want to straighten their crooked teeth, improve their smile and correct their bite. Orthodontic treatment is usually less expensive than treating the more serious dental problems, such as decay, gum disease, tooth loss and joint disorders, which may otherwise develop in later years. Left untreated, most orthodontic problems become worse.

How long are braces on for?

At Profile Orthodontics we use SureSmile technology to provide outstanding results in less time than conventional treatment. Studies show that the average treatment time with SureSmile is up to 30% faster than conventional braces.

Every orthodontic problem is different and the time taken depends on the individual case. Typically, treatment time in braces ranges from one to two years, depending on the patient's age and growth, the severity of the problem, and patient cooperation.

An indication of the time frame for your orthodontic treatment will be given at your initial consultation. Wearing appliances as directed, maintaining good oral hygiene, avoiding breakages and keeping scheduled appointments will help you to complete treatment on time.

Can I still play my musical instrument and play sport?

We recommend that you protect your smile by wearing a mouthguard when playing sports. We can individually fit a special orthodontic mouthguard in a choice of styles and colours.

There may be an initial period of adjustment when playing a wind instrument. Orthodontic wax can be placed over your braces to prevent discomfort.

Will I need to lose any teeth?

We avoid the extraction of teeth where possible, but for a small number of patients it is necessary in order to achieve the best result.

You will find the team at Profile Orthodontics are highly qualified and experienced people who provide an exceptional level of orthodontic care in a friendly and relaxed environment.
